UNIVERSITY OF DERBY FOOTBALL JOURNALISM

The only football journalism degree in the world

The University of Derby's Football Journalism course is the only one of its kind in the UK. Students get unrivalled access to the professional football media environment and gain valuable work experience with tutors well-connected in the industry who put students in touch with football clubs and media organisations.
Amongst the many opportunities, students have been at the heart of the Ewe Rams, contributing to our social media and heading up our matchday coverage, writing match reports, providing live updates and conducting post-match interviews. All to further enhance their skills and experience in media and provide DCFCW fans with great coverage of the First Team and Development squads.
Around 80 Football Journalism students are currently working for clubs such as Derby County, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest, Burton Albion, Walsall and Mansfield.
There is also an exciting scholarship opportunity alongside the course for female footballers, who can play for the Ewe Rams whilst studying. Current Derby County FC Women’s #6 Ella Hilliard is a UoD Football Journalist in her first year of the scholarship.

Other opportunities the students have experienced include getting full press accreditation to cover the 2022 UEFA Women’s European Championships. Eleven students travelled up and down the country. They worked alongside professionals to cover the tournament. During the course of the Championship, the students attended matches, interviewed players, and wrote features for the likes of England Football, Reach PLC, the Athletic and Manchester City. Two of the students reported on the intense final in real-time from Wembley Stadium.
Check out all the students also coverage of domestic football from press boxes across the country, their Women’s Euros coverage and more on their DerbyUniFootyJournos website.
The course is forever evolving with new and improved modules on e-sports, video journalism, social media, feature writing, commentary and punditry, data analysis and visualisation, the societal impact of journalism, and more.
Applications for 2023/24 are open now.
