Rotated Rams Progress in League Cup

Derby County Women ran out 5-0 winners over Division One North side Barnsley Women in the FA Women's National League Cup Preliminary Round, paving the way for a local derby against Burton Albion Women in the 1st Round.

Samantha Griffiths named a changed side for the Clash with the Tykes Women, following victory at Loughborough Lightning on Thursday evening, and it paid off, as the hosts hit their visitors for five at the Don Amott Arena.

The Rams took a while to find their feet in the first half, offering only real half-chances whilst dominating possession, though the visitors also had half-chances to give the Ewe Rams a brief scare.

Derby found the breakthrough after 28 minutes, Ellie Gilliatt struck an effort from distance, which was tipped onto the bar, but Emily Joyce followed through and rifled the ball home into an empty net.

The Ewe Rams settled following the goal and saw out the first half without any real danger to their net. Hannah Ward had Derby’s only chance, but she struck it over the bar, and the Rams went into the break with a one goal lead.

Fresh legs entered the field at half-time, with Jade Formaston, Megan Tinsley and Kira Rai were all brought on to help consolidate the lead.

Tinsley added her second goal of the week, following her free-kick on Thursday, after a deep cross from Sarah Jackson, and it was hit into the top corner, to give Derby a two-goal lead after 52 minutes.

The changes clearly made a notable difference, as Derby started to turn the screw in the second-half but the Barnsley goalkeeper was in fine form, doing her utmost to keep the Ewes at bay.

Tinsley added her second of the game, meeting a pulled back Kira Rai cross and looping her effort over the keeper with her right foot for Derby’s third, as the Rams went from strength to strength.

Emily Joyce added her second of the day, and Derby’s fourth, as Rai drilled a low cross in, and Joyce slid in ahead of the Tykes defender to loop the ball over the keeper and add further gloss to the scoreline.

Ellie Gilliatt continued her goalscoring form to net her 12th of the season as she fired a shot after another period of sustained pressure, that could have led to a heavier score-line.

A convincing second-half was brought to an end to give the Ewe Rams, who face a tie with Burton Albion Women in the 1st Round of the Cup on November 7th, and are now sitting on a 7 game win streak, and have gone 5 games without conceding.
