Opening Day win at Brighouse

Derby County Women opened their FA Women's National League Northern Division account with a hard fought 3-2 win at newly promoted Brighouse Town Ladies.

Goals from Ellie Gilliatt, Jade Formaston and Precious Hamilton secured the points for the Ewe Rams as they came from behind in a pulsating battle that ebbed and flowed and could have gone either way.

Boss Sam Griffiths gave a debut to new signing Nikki Miles, a summer capture from Coventry United Ladies, with fellow new signing Bolu Fisher making the bench for the opening game.

It was the Ewe Rams that started brightly with Gilliatt breaking the deadlock after a through ball from Formaston, found the striker who made no mistake. Moments later it could have been two with Megan Tinsley crashing a shot off the bar.

However, it was Brighouse that turned the game on its head with two quick goals going into half-time, catching the Ewe Rams on the break and give themselves the advantage, with work to do for the visitors.

Both sides had chances after the break but it was the Ewes that got the crucial next goal as substitute Sophie Domingo earned a penalty, with Formaston converting to level the score.

That goal proved crucial, as a quick third goal put the visitors ahead deep into the second-half as Hamilton held off the Brighouse defence to rifle a shot into the roof of the net.

The striker's goal was enough to secure the three points and give Derby County Women the opening day win they craved, to get off to the perfect start with a 3-2 win at Brighouse Town Ladies.
