Ewe Rams Exit League Cup in Extra-Time

Derby County Women were knocked out of the FAWNL Cup after a 4-1 defeat to Brighouse Town Women after Extra-Time.

The hosts took the lead through Sophie Domingo, but Brighouse Town, equalised in the final quarter of an hour before the visitors hit a tired Ewe Rams side for three more goals in extra time to knock Derby County Women out of the league Cup.

Derby started brightly and came close early on with experienced head Ellie Gilliatt hitting the bar seven minutes in before chances for Olivia Edwards and Precious Hamilton were thwarted deep into the Tangerines 6-yard box.

Derby continued to put Brighouse under a lot of pressure and looked like they were going to score from Jade Formaston's header however it was cleared off the line by a Brighouse defender.

Sophie Domingo had a great chance on 40 minutes but sent her strike just wide. Minutes later Precious Hamilton sent a header flying inches past the post as the home side dominated proceedings but were unable to break the deadlock going into the break.

The hosts finally made their pressure pay when they found their goal in the 59th minute. A ball from deep set Domingo through on goal and all the winger had to do was drill it low past the Brighouse keeper.

The goal seemed to have come at a crucial time as Brighouse had started the second half brightly and created a few half chances of their own, with the contest evenly poised.

However, it wouldn't seel the deal as Brighouse equalised deep into the second-half. A deep free kick from Daniele Whittam floated into the top corner and sent the game to extra time, with the hosts tiring.

The extra-time period was eventful to say the least but unfortunately it came at the expense of the Ewe Rams as Brighouse scored three well worked goals.,

First , Shauna Legge's scissor kick put the host ahead in the tie and with the Ewe Rams searching for a equaliser and pushing forward, Leah Embley and Imogen Williams sealed the visitors passage to the quarter-finals with two well hit strikes.

Next-up for the Ewe Rams is FA Women's National League action and an away clash with unbeaten Wolves on the 23rd January.
