Domingo Brace sees Ewes Tame Tigers

Derby County Women went closer to securing the runners-up spot in the FA Women’s National League Northern Division with a hard fought 2-1 win over Hull City Ladies on Sunday.

A brace from super sub Sophie Domingo secured the three points and they go into their final game of the season against Sheffield FC Women knowing a win will secure them second place behind champions Wolves Women.

Manager Sam Griffiths made a number of changes for the clash with the Tigers including a start for talented 16-year old Marli Rhodes-Andrews.

The first-half saw the Ewe Rams take partial control of the match without creating too many clear-cut chances and they had to be wary of a spirited Tigers side looking to create their own chances on the break.

Chances for Ellie Gilliatt, Emily Joyce and Kira Rai came and went as the Ewes went into the break having yet to break the deadlock.

That deadlock was broken on 53 minutes as substitute Domingo pounced on a parried shot from Gilliatt to give the visitors the lead early in the second-half.

However, the lead was short lived when on 57 minutes, the home side produced a quality finish through Katie Thompson to draw themselves level with over half an hour still to play.

The game became more open with both sides searching for the crucial next goal but it was Domingo who again put the Ewe Rams ahead as she latched onto a through ball to calmly slot into the net.

With the lead now restored, Derby went in search of a third with Gilliatt and substitute Emelia Wilson having chances. However, it was enough to seal the win and leave boss Griffiths satisfied at the three points.

Griffiths said “I thought Hull kept us at bay and worked really hard and they made it difficult for us and you can see why that despite their position in the table, they have always been in games.

“We probably weren’t at our best and we’ve obviously changed it up a bit today to get some minutes for those that haven’t had as many as we’d liked recently but the main thing was to get the three points.

“We missed a lot of chances and the way we try and play is always positive so happy that we’re creating and we know when we’ve got the likes of Sophie on the bench because she’d been away, we can put the trust in her and pose a real threat and that’s what she did.”
