Comeback Win Seals Academy Cup Triumph

Derby County Women's U20 Academy side sealed the double with a 4-3 win over Lincoln United in the East Midlands Women Regional League Cup Final at Eastwood CFC.

Despite trailing twice by two goals at points throughout the match, the Ewe Rams youngsters resilience was on show as they overturned the deficit and seal a dramatic victory.

The action came alight from the off as the Ewe Rams had a chance to take an early lead through rising star Marli Rhodes-Andrews but her shot was expertly palmed away by the Lincoln United Goalkeeper.

That save looked crucial just moments later as Lincoln United took the lead when a curling shot into the top corner left Derby Goalkeeper with no chance to stun the Ewe Rams.

On the quarter hour mark, a long ball over the top set Lincoln through on goal and a superbly timed chip doubled their lead and left a shell-shocked Derby, with work to do to claw back that deficit.

A lifeline came just before the half-hour mark when Iesha Rollins let fly from 25-yards with her powerful shot squirming through the Lincoln United Goalkeepers grasp to give the Ewe Rams hope, heading into the second-half.

That hope looked to be distinguished early in the second-half as Lincoln once again had a two goal cushion with a smart through ball, allowing their striker to fire beyond Millington in the Derby Goal.

Once again, the young side showed their resilience, as they began to control the game with captain Rosie Hunt slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net and leave the score at a tantalising 3-2 with over half an hour still to play.

The pressure continued to come from the Ewe Rams and Rhodes-Andrews got the goal her performance deserved to level the tie when her 35-yard free-kick caught the Lincoln GK off guard to nestle into the roof of the net.

With the scores level and time starting to run out, it was a case of who could take that final chance and win the cup for their side and it come with just 10 minutes remaining when a hopeful ball was headed into the net by Olivia Edwards with the assistant referee indicating it had crossed the line despite it being hooked away by Lincoln United.

With their noses in front, the character of the side to avert any serious danger come to the forefront as they secured their comeback win and earn a league and cup double to finish an outstanding season.
